"'Our medical staff and patients made us aware there were waiting lists. ...we knew there was an unmet need,' said Deborah Metz, vice president of hospital operations at RGH. The number of weight-loss surgeries has risen sharply in the last few years. The procedures have also almost quadrupled nationwide, from 36,700 cases in 2000 to 140,640 this year, according to the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. 'Bariatric' is the medical term for obesity treatment."
